13 July 2011
Asiacell - the first and largest private Iraqi telecommunications company and the first mobile telecom company to provide coverage for all of Iraq - called for greater government protection of the company's staff and communication towers yesterday, 12th July 2011, in its letters to the Communications and Media Commission (CMC) and related security entities after recently coming under attack by armed terrorist groups in Mosul and other areas.

These attacks corresponded with inside information provided by Iraqi security forces on the terrorist groups' intentions to destroy all Asiacell towers in Mosul. In a statement made by the company, Asiacell informed the public that recent and upcoming service disruptions are the direct result of the sabotage of its towers. To date, seven towers have been attacked and rendered completely or partially out of commission, which has in turn left several other related towers affected. Asiacell technicians are being dispatched to all damaged towers and maintenance will commence as soon as possible.

Reaffirming its commitment to providing telecom services to all Iraqis, Asiacell stressed that it will not be intimidated by the threats of terrorists who are bent on hindering the country's progress and reconstruction efforts. Asiacell asks that the Iraqi Government provide the necessary security measures to protect the interests of Asiacell's subscribers and the company's significant investments by safeguarding its infrastructure and the lives of its employees.
