Sharjah, Tuesday, May 17, 2011-- The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Club at American University of Sharjah (AUS) held the ASCE Open Day recently at the university's Student Center and Engineering buildings. Participants from universities across the UAE were present at the day-long event.
The ASCE Open Day commenced with opening remarks from Dr. Jamal El-Din Abdalla, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering; Dr. Rami Haweeleh, ASCE Club Advisor and Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering; and ASCE Club President Naser Al Sughaiyer. The remarks were followed by a short video presentation about civil engineering and the development of construction around the world.
The highlight of the event was a series of competitions that included the Spaghetti Bridge Competition, where students created a bridge out of spaghetti strands with the objective of carrying the heaviest load using the least amount of strands; the Egg Drop Competition, which involved wrapping an egg in hay in such a way that it could be dropped from a height without breaking; the Concrete Strength Competition; and the Rube Goldberg Machine Competition.
"The basic concept of all these competitions is for the items created to possess the maximum strength, yet the least weight to minimize this ratio," said Shyma Jamshid, an AUS student majoring in civil engineering.
The event was organized under the supervision of the Office of Student Affairs' Student Activities Office and participating universities included University of Sharjah, American University in Dubai and Abu Dhabi University. Also present in the event were AUS faculty members and instructors of the College of Engineering.
The AUS team won first place in both the Spaghetti Bridge Competition and the Rube Goldberg Machine Competition. A prize distribution ceremony was held to conclude the event.
