Detailed design of IMC by PSOMAS

Apex Medical Group President, Dr. Abdullah Al Joaib is pleased to announce that the detailed design of the International Medical City (IMC) infrastructure master plan has been completed by PSOMAS.

PSOMAS is a leading US based consulting engineering firm providing transportation and infrastructure engineering services to both governmental and private clients.  Headquartered in Los Angeles, PSOMAS was founded over 65 years ago and continues to deliver exceptional service through their focus on their clients' long-term needs. Sustainable practices are incorporated into all of their services. From designing sustainable water systems and removing pollutants from urban storm water runoff, to site design for LEED-certified public and private projects and their renewable energy practice, PSOMAS is in the forefront of the sustainable design movement.

Mr. Ross Baker, VP of PSOMAS, stated that "PSOMAS provided strategic planning and infrastructure design to refine the International Medical City concept plans into a comprehensive technical master plan that integrated the building program with infrastructure, site drainage and environmental constraints. PSOMAS is pleased to play role in the development of this strategic project and looks forward to a long term relationship with IMC."

Dr. Abdullah stated that, "Building on the rising trend of medical and health tourism, the International Medical City will be developed in a serene setting on the coast, just east of Salalah, where patients and their families may stay in an environment that is supportive and culturally aware of their individual lifestyles. Site layout and land uses have been carefully placed to provide synergy and promote interaction between related activities. IMC Masterplan design was performed with careful look into sustainability of project and with adherence to environmental regulations"

About the IMC

The International Medical City multi-phased development is set to fill a healthcare gap in the region by offering expert services that patients from the GCC usually have to travel as far as Europe and the USA.

The International Medical City development will include the following state of the art facilities:

  • The region's first multispecialty transplant center
  • A 250-bed tertiary care multispecialty hospital
  • High-tech diagnostic center
  • Healthcare resort
  • Wellness center
  • Luxury hotel
  • Medical and nursing colleges
  • Purpose built research and development center complex.

IMC Master Plan

Internationally recognized Atkins Group developed a Pre-Concept Master Plan based on a comprehensive program for a self-contained Medical City that would focus on meeting the medical and cultural needs of families from the GCC region as well as other international locations.

Development of this master plan has refined and improved the pre-master plan concepts into a full technical master plan that defines the land use and building program, architectural themes and images, entry points to the various land use components and landscape visions. Supporting these visual elements of the overall program are the infrastructure components needed to ensure a fully functioning Medical City that implements sustainable design principles across all elements of the program.

Site infrastructure will be installed underground to eliminate visual impacts to the environmental setting of the Medical City. Water delivered from the Municipality of Salalah will be stored on site to meet both domestic and fire protection needs. An onsite sewage treatment plant will be developed to generate reclaimed water for irrigation uses. All electrically operated equipment including transformers, pumps and motors will use the latest energy efficient rated items.  IMC design limited use of vehicles in IMC development and will be utilizing electric mode of transportation to transport IMC residence.  IMC have studied the implementation of renewable energy systems and working with global manufactures of such systems.

The design plans have been submitted to Oman governmental authorities for final approval. AMG is in discussions with international and local contractors for the first phase of construction.
