Al Mulla was informed that almost 40 percent of the filling and cutting works at the depot had been completed.
The Al Rashidiya depot will serve as the Metro yard that will accommodate around 64 trains, and will also operate as the control and safety center as well as the maintenance workshop.
Al Mulla's visit included the site at Jabal Ali zone where the concrete viaduct segments for the Metro construction are being prepared. He was briefed about the procedure that is involved in preparation of the concrete mixture for the elevated viaduct. On a daily basis around 30 to 40 concrete segments are prepared; each the size of 40 sq meters. These segments will be used to build viaducts for the trains.
Al Mulla inspected the construction site on Sheikh Zayed road. Currently, the service lines that include water pipes, telephone cables and electric cables are being relocated. Piers or Columns of 1.7metres diameter supporting the viaduct are under construction and these are supported on piles of 30metres depth. Over 200 piles and 8 piers have been completed out of the proposed 1232 piers and to be established on the red line.
Other sites visited included the Union Square station, which is considered as one of the main under ground stations, stretched to 228 meters in length, 48 meters in width and will be of a depth of 18 meters. It is among 28 other stations on the red line. The Union Square is expected to accommodate more than 35,000 passengers per hour, and will be the first station where the red and green lines will interface.
Mr. Al Mulla was informed about the progress on the construction of the basement walls for the station. The walls, called diaphragm walls ,are1.2 meters thick reinforced concrete and over 45meters in depth constructed by special equipment and these are in progress at all four under ground stations at Union Square, Al Riqa road, Deira City Center and Burjuman Center.
Meanwhile, work is progressing at Union square station to allow the start of the underground tunnels. One tunnel machine will start from Union square station towards Al Riqqa Street up to City Center station within six months, while the other stage is towards Burjuman Center will start within five months. The length of the underground tunnels will be 4.5 kilometers within the red line and 9.5 kilometers within the green line.
H.E Al Mulla appreciated the progress on the project and stressed the importance of maximizing efforts to achieve optimum results on time.
