SAS International is proud to announce a range of its Architectural Metalwork solutions have been installed at the new 103,000 sqm terminal at Jordan's Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) including the visually striking Tubeline ceiling system.

Designed by Foster + Partners the new terminal is expected to handle an increased capacity of nearly nine million passengers. Working with local building expertise the architects have constructed the terminal entirely from concrete as the high thermal mass of the material provides passive environmental control catering for the varying summer temperatures of Amman's climate. The tessellated roof canopy with concrete domes, extend to shade the facades. To enable seamless future expansion, each dome is a modular unit.

SAS International worked closely with the architects Foster + Partners to develop an acoustic solution for the environment to fit within these concrete canopies, reminiscent of a Bedouin tent. The manufacturer designed and supplied 12,000sqm of Tubeline, a curved metal linear ceiling system, complete with acoustic grey insulation to blend with the concrete soffit.

Andrew Jackson, director at SAS International comments; "Balancing function with aesthetics is one of the biggest demands when considering products for transportation hubs. The choice of materials and innovative products all have a part to play in providing not only a distinct finish to enhance the vision, but also an environment that is comfortable for the volumes of people in transit, with acoustic control addressed."

The company also manufactured curved lighting grilles, 4,000sqm of bespoke triangular ceiling panels and 12,000 meters of its System 700 linear slat ceiling system. Installed within a triangular geometric grid ceiling system, the linear slats of System 700 provide a finish of neat architectural lines within the baggage claim area.

The location allows the airport to grow by 6 per cent per annum for the next twenty-five years, increasing capacity from 3 million to 12.8 million passengers per annum by 2030.

The airport was also winner of the transport category of the Cityscape Architectural Review Awards.
