ADMC's student council held a lecture today on the Swine Flu pandemic, also known as H1N1 at the college auditorium. The lecture was aimed at raising awareness among students concerning the Influenza. Guest speaker Dr. Mudhar Nazer Hamandi, a General Practitioner from Al Noor Hospital, highlighted the critical issues and concerns regarding the Swine Flu, emphasizing that while there is no need for panic, there is always a need for caution. "Protecting against germs through anti bacterial and anti microbe solutions is an essential part of prevention" Dr. Hamandi stressed.
"The flu is a highly infectious respiratory disease that people can get after inhaling droplets that an infected person has coughed or sneezed on them", Hamandi said. He explained that the virus can also live for up to eight hours on household items such as door knobs and remote controls, and people can get it after they touch such items.
Those attending the lecture learned in detail via info slides about how the virus originated, how it's transmitted and how to detect warning signs, especially in children where symptoms may not be as easy to notice.
Dr. Hamandi also touched on issues of vaccinations and the measures the Abu Dhabi Health Authority is taking to maintain and check the Flu as doctors are required to report any patients who they suspect have or display symptoms of having the flu.
The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session which kept the audience engaged as many questions were placed to Dr. Hamandi, especially concerning vaccinations and immunizations against the influenza.
Also attending was Dr Simon Jones, ADMC Director, who stressed that "it's our responsibility to educate the students and our community about H1N1 virus and to ensure that preventive measures are taken to safeguard against any potential threats."
