Sharjah, United Arab Emirates : In their quest for contributing to an advanced digital economy, and to achieve digital transformation in the maritime industry, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport Sharjah Branch (AASTS) successfully participates at the 41st edition of GITEX, the UAE’s largest tech show scheduled to be held from 17-21 October at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. At the event, AASTS demonstrates its latest offerings in maritime education and training, and the latest systems and technology implemented at the educational facility.
As the UAE moves towards a technologically advanced digital future in all its sectors, including the maritime and seafaring industry, AASTS is looking to actively contribute to the country’s vision by achieving complete digital transformation in the maritime industry. It also aims to produce tech-savvy, qualified individuals through extensive training opportunities at their full-equipped facility located in Sharjah.
His Excellency Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar Ismail Farag, President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport said, “Technology is now fully embedded into the maritime industry, and we understand the significance of creating digital solutions in the way we operate. At AASTS, we strive for continuous improvement in our methods, and aim to lead the way in the sector by adopting technology for learning and training systems though simulation and implementing technologies for digital solutions such as block chain and big data. In recent years, technology has changed the face of the sector and transformed it into a more efficient industry that directly impacts the way we operate. Such innovative solutions have also benefited the sector’s security and improved its efficiency, and it is important that we adopt these changes and lead the way. Automation is the future of maritime.
“The UAE is one of the main destinations for maritime business, and hosts dozens of global marine companies. Its volume of trade exceeds 280 billion dirhams, and owing to this strong position, the maritime industry needs academic institutions to contribute to research and development in the sector and develop digital solutions and technologies,” H.E. Dr Faraj added.
Prof. Dr. Hossam Shawky, Acting Director of the Academy's Branch in Sharjah said, “Venturing into automation and technology is inevitable for our sector, considering the rapid advancements in the sector. GITEX is a very important event for AASTS, as we will be looking to promote our state-of-the-art systems and solutions at the event. Apart from this, we are aiming to discover new offerings in technology and automation presented at GITEX and get a glimpse of some of these technologies.
“Situated at the crossroads of global trade routes, the UAE enjoys a strategic position and is considered a major maritime hub owing to its state-of-the-art infrastructure. The sector is expected to grow by multiple folds in the next few years, and we need to ensure that we have the right tools and innovative technologies through which we can train our students to take the sector to new heights,” Shawky added.
Fully equipped state-of-the-art campus
Built on an area of more than 200 thousand square meters, and equipped with the latest educational tools and facilities, the College of Maritime Transport and Technology offers two specialisations: port operations and maritime operations. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Maritime Transport Technology + 2nd Mate Certificate of Competency; or a Bachelor of Marine Engineering Technology in marine mechanics or marine electricity + a 3rd Engineer Certificate of Competency. Both disciplines qualify graduates to work on board commercial and offshore service vessels.
Offering professional programs through digitalised solutions
AASTS seeks to attract professionals working in maritime companies in the UAE who wish to take specialised training courses as part of its professional development and continuing education programmes. The institution provides maritime passport renewal for marine officers, engineers, and seafarers, and cooperates with the training departments of shipping companies to design specialised training programmes in various maritime technical and administrative areas, benefitting from the Academy’s state-of-the-art simulators.
Digital revolution at GITEX 2021
Bringing together the best innovations to ignite positive change in the consumer and business sector, GITEX 2021 will fuel the high speed expansion of the region’s digital ecosystem. In line with the country’s innovation visions and digital revolutions, the event will witness several thousand companies in attendance from more than 100 countries around the globe. About the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport - Sharjah:
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Sharjah and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport subsidiary of the Arab States University, headquartered in Egypt, to establish a branch of the Academy in Khorfakkan, Sharjah. Dr. Ismail Abdul Ghaffar Ismail President of the Academy has signed the MOU at the headquarters of the Sharjah Research Academy. In its plans, the new academy in the Emirate of Sharjah will graduate students specializing in various maritime science and technology majors, international maritime logistics and international maritime law, which will provide modern specialized quality studies and provide the market with specialists in all fields of maritime work.
