Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) is implementing the fibre optic cable project from the wilayat of Ibri in the Al Dahirah region to the wilayat of Haima in the Al Wusta region at an outlay of RO1.4 million. The cable passes through Fahud and Seih Rool and will be connected to the fibre optic link in Dhofar Governorate.

A source at Omantel said that the 600km-length cable is divided into two phases; the first phase, beginning from the wilayat of Ibri to Fahud area through Hamraa Al Durouaa, was completed in July in cooperation with the contracting company Electroman. The second phase of the cable implemented by Bahwan Telecom Company, the source added, extends from Fahud area to Bahja area in the wilayat of Haima, passing through areas of (Qarn Al Alam, Seih Rool, Pareek) which will be linked after completion in October 2005 with the fibre optic cable in Dhofar Governorate.

The source said the implementation of the cable project (Ibri-Fahud-Bahja) falls within Omantel's keen interest to provide alternatives to the telecom traffic in the Sultanate adding that the new cable would provide a standby protection for the existing cable extended between the wilayat of Ibri and the wilayat of Haima through the wilayat of Adam, Ghaya and Um Al Zamaim in addition to the provision of required capacity and telecom services in the areas where the cable is passing.
