In order to develop the country's fuel portfolio and taking advantage of diesel passenger cars, national diesel engine will be mass-produced by 2013.
Mohammad Zali, IPCO (Iran Khodro Powertrain Company) CEO in this regard said, "Based on the schedules, 50,000 sets of diesel Samand are going to be produced and marketed by 2013."
IKCO-made diesel engine meets euro V standard requirements. This 1500cc engine produces 90 KW of power. Its torque is 256 Nm and it sips only 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 Km.
Due to the importance of providing proper fuel, Euro IV and V standard-approved fuel will be accordingly provided by Iran's ministry of petroleum next year while the Ministry has participated in the design and development process of this engine.
So far, 23 sets of this diesel engine have been produced, three of which have been mounted on IKCO cars to pass required tests. Samand, Soren, and Runna are the candidates to receive IKCO diesel engine. Apart from the combustion chamber, which IKCO went through its production process in collaboration with a foreign partner all the other parts have been designed and developed by Iranian part and component makers.
The experience gained in design and development of EF7, was the pilot for design and development of this diesel engine. Technical knowledge acquired in EF7 project paved the way for Iranian part makers to easily overcome the problems and since the two engines share many parts, the diesel engine would be mass produced sooner than expected.
