Volition gives households total flexibility to manage their digital and communication technology

DUBAI: 14 November, 2006 - Global telecommunications company 3M today announced that it will showcase an innovative structured cabling solution for residential users at Gitex Dubai 2006, the largest ICT exhibition in the region.

3M's Volition home networks give households total flexibility to manage their digital and communication technology.

The Volition system acts as a digital exchange for all cable and broadcast TV, telephone, broadband internet and more. The system allows any particular device to be quickly and easily set up on the network without being confined to specific rooms and spaces.

"Homes across the Middle East and particularly in the GCC region have seen a huge increase in the amount of communications equipment installed. This is a space where the greatest demands are placed on technology to deliver for consumers," said Shome Bagof 3M Middle East. "Not only do all of these require reliable network access, with such a confusing array of individual technologies and services throughout the household, they must also be able to be installed wherever they are needed. This is at the heart of 3M's technology," he added.

The Volition home network comprises a central communications box and multi-media cable rack. These are connected to standard outlets throughout the house. A single model of cable and socket allows any product to connect to the network, wherever it is located.

With the Volition system, a baby room can be converted into a home office, an attic turned into a games room or an internet connection installed in the kitchen without the hassle or costs that such changes typically involve.

This complete system has proved popular with property developers, architects and consultants who are preparing their new properties (and re-fitting their old) for residents with modern technology needs.

"Consumers can also arrange to have them retro-fitted to their properties, which tends to occur when households reach a technological tipping point," said Shome BAG. "Typically they might have broadband internet, on-demand digital TV and online games consoles, and be unable to use them when and where they want to around the home," he added.

3M will be showcasing its structured cabling solutions at stand 21 in the Dubai Internet City Community Zone at Gitex 2006 located in Concourse 2, between Exhibition Halls 8 and the Sheikh Maktoum Hall at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
