Ahmed Fathallah (Egypt) won the membership of the International Law Commission 2023-2027, after obtaining 159 votes in the elections that took place in November 2021 at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations Osama Abdel khaleq said the Egyptian candidate represented Africa, and his victory came after highly competitive elections, which confirms the position that Egypt enjoys in the international community, and highlights the distinction of Egyptian cadres who are able to positively contribute in more than one field. He added that Egypt, as one of the founding countries of the United Nations, is always keen to contribute to strengthening the principle of the rule of law at the international level, which is supported by the presence of a well-established Egyptian legal school, academically, judicially, and doctrinally. The permanent delegate pointed out that the past weeks witnessed intense efforts led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt’s embassies abroad and the permanent mission to the United Nations in New York to secure the votes needed for the Egyptian candidate to win, adding that this represents a new addition to Egypt’s distinguished diplomatic balance at the international level. The International Law Commission includes 34 experts with distinguished academic and practical experience and qualifications in the field of international law. The Egyptian candidacy for membership of the committee comes within the framework of Egypt’s incitement to continuously contribute to international efforts to codify and develop international law, a matter that Egypt has always attached great importance to through active participation in the work of the International Law Commission with more than one member since its establishment in 1947. © 2021 Daily News Egypt.
