TUNIS - The Eco-Constitution group, a socially aware independent collective of activists and experts in matters of sustainable development, is campaigning to secure in the future constitution the right to a sound environment and to citizens' rights to have access to environmental information and share in political decisions likely to have significant impact on the environment.

The government should, according to these ecologists, endeavour to achieve sustainable development that secures both social equity and economic development and preserves the environment.  Members of the network for nature and development RANDET have been discussing this issue for three days (November 25 - 28 ).  Workshops were held at Ennahli park in collaboration with the federation ''France Nature Environnement ''with attendance of French ecologists and Tunisian counterparts as well as delegates of junior environment associations set up after the Revolution to review the French experience in matters of environmental democracy.

It appeared from these debates that Tunisia is facing six major environmental challenges : the sustainable management of resources (water, soil, forests..), the management of pollution, the fight against pollution, the preservation of the coastline, the development of sites, the saving of energy and the adaptation to climate change.
