Govt refers draft amendments to Constitution to Lower House in Jordan

State Minister for Media Affairs Faisal Shboul on Sunday announced that the government referred the 2021 draft amendments of the Constitution and the draft election law to the Lower House, as well as the draft law on political parties to the Lower House in line with the constitutional procedures of approval, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Shboul said that the amendments referred on Sunday were proposed by the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System, as well as the government.

In implementation of the Royal directives affirming the adoption of the Royal committee’s work and presenting them to Parliament, the Cabinet referred the proposals without any interventions or attempts to change them, Shboul said.

Shboul added that the new legislation marks the beginning of a new phase of political modernisation that coincides with Jordan’s second centenary.

The new draft laws will bring fundamental changes to the electoral system based on encouraging partisan work, he said. He also pointed out that the government is preparing programmes to develop the governmental administration, as part of the administrative reform plan, which comes in parallel with economic reforms.
