BEIRUT: The Army has uncovered over 75 containers of dangerous chemicals at Beiruts port, all of which pose a threat if they leak according to a statement released by the Army Monday.

The chemicals were discovered by specialized teams from the Armys Engineering Regiment, working alongside a number of French experts who have been assisting at the port since the deadly explosion on Aug. 4.

The chemicals have since been treated by scientific means, the Armys statement said.

Earlier in August, a separate contingent of 20 potentially dangerous leaking chemical containers was found at Beirut Port, before being secured by firefighters and chemical experts.

The Army's find follows a catastrophic explosion at Beirut Port Aug. 4 that killed nearly 200 people, injured 7,000 and damaged large parts of the capital.

The blast was caused by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate being poorly stored at the facility.
