Dubai: Zilzal won the first heat of the Dubai Expo 2020 Traditional 22-feet Dhow Sailing Championship, organised by the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), on Saturday.
Sailing from the eastern bridge of Palm Island towards Jumeirah before turning up to the gateway to Palm Island, the 65-vessel race was dominated by Zilzal, owned by Marwan Abdullah Mohammad Al Marzouqi and skippered by Omar Abdullah Mohammad Al Marzouqi, followed closely by Dahes, skippered by Hassan Abdullah Mohammad Al Marzouqui in second place. Lafi picked up speed after trailing for a while to move into third place, skippered by Majid Ahmad Khadim Al Muhairi. Toufan, led by Ebrahim Esmail Al Marzouqi, followed in fourth place with Ghazi, owned by Shaikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and skippered by Ahmad Saeed Salim Al Rumaithi, taking fifth position.
“Our team deserve this win as we have put in a lot of hard work during practice for this season,” Omar Abdullah Mohammad Al Marzouqi said.
Ali Bin Ghulaitha, CEO of DIMC, said: “We had a wonderful race and it was great to see so many boats participate in the first heat. We look forward to more participants in the subsequent heats.”
