Abu Dhabi, June 9, 2007 (WAM): Zayed Charity and HumanitarianFoundation spent USD 40 million during the last 18 months onvarious projects. The Foundation's participation to alleviatedistress and ease up sufferings across the world included financialsupport and implementation of various projects within UAE andabroad. Several Arab, Asian, African and European countries didbenefit from these humanitarian help from the Foundation.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Boardof Trustees of the Zayed Foundation for Charity and HumanitarianWorks said that President H.H.Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyanis always keen to ensure that the Foundation fulfills its charitymission in the best possible way.

He noted that when ever there arose a need for help intimes of distress brought about by natural calamities, fammine,draught or poverty, the Foundation extended support to everysection of the mankind across the world without ethnic or religiousconsiderations. He asked everyone to pray to God to include thesecharities given by the Foundation in the record of virtuousdeeds of its Founder late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The Foundations report showed that over USD 12 millionwas used for various charity projects within UAE during 2006.

These included construction of mosques, centres for the peoplewith special needs and publication of books.

Nearly USD 7 million was spent during 2006 on variouscharity projects in the Arab countries like Bahrain, Saudi Arabia,Sudan, Morocco, Yemen, Comoros Islands, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon,Egypt and Mauritania. During the first half of this year theFoundation earmarked an amount of USD 4.3million for a numberof charity activities in these countries. These included constructionof hospitals and Health care centres, educational institutionsand projects for Arabic studies.

During 2006 the Foundation's help for varioushumanitarian and charity projects in Asian countries reached USD 3.7 million while during the first half of this year theFoundation allocated USD2.6 million for projects in these countrieswhich included India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Tajikistanand Philippines.

The Foundation also spent an amount of USD 1.3 millionfor the projects in Pakistan aimed at the rehabilitation youngchildren who once worked as camel jockeys.

The report said that the major part of the humanitarianhelp was given to African countries which suffer from draughtand fammine. During the first half of the current year the Foundationallocated a total amount of USD 12.6 million for various projectsin Niger, Ethiopia, Chad, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Mali, Mauritius,Burkina Faso, Cameron and Eritrea. Among these projects weredrilling of sweet water wells in the draught-hit countries andconstruction and running of hospitals.

The Foundation also implemented various charity projectsin Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Belgium.

Director General of Zayed Foundation for Charityand Humanitarian Works Salem bin Obeid Al Dhahiri said that theFoundation is well-rooted in the field of humanitarian activitieswith great support from President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin ZayedAl Nahyan , H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VicePresident, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and General SheikhMohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and DeputySupreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces as well as the continuousfollow-up from Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman ofthe Board of Trustees of the Zayed Foundation for Charity andHumanitarian Works.
