The second phase of development of a key junction in Manama is projected to be completed next year.

The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry yesterday said the project at Al Farooq Junction covers an area of 12,200sqm.

Municipal Affairs Under-Secretary Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said beautification work will continue until September 2020.

During a meeting on the developments of the project, which will be implemented by Newcastle Contracting Company, Shaikh Mohammed was briefed on the progress and also toured the 50,000sqm segment of the first phase of the project which was completed in November last year and consisted of planted palms, other trees and seasonal flowers.

“The ministry has been working under the instructions of Minister Essam Khalaf to develop the beautification concepts of planting in open flat spaces as well as the maintenance of water fountains given the importance of the junction as a key entry into Bahrain,” said Shaikh Mohammed.

“The project includes the reclamation and leveling of the land as well as the establishment of an automatic irrigation network, reservoirs and stations for irrigation pumps.

“It also includes the establishment of water fountains and electric lights, the cultivations of various seasonal plants and trees as well as green spaces suitable for the climate of Bahrain along with the establishment of ground reservoirs and to store the necessary irrigation water.

“This project comes in line with the comprehensive development of Al Farooq Junction as the second phase of the ministry’s strategy is to increase the green spaces and preserve the aesthetic view of public roads.

“The ministry, within its strategic plan and based on the government’s programme, has developed an integrated action plan to increase the green area and beautification projects at the bottom of bridges, streets and intersections across various regions in Bahrain.”

Shaikh Mohammed was accompanied by Wael Al Mubarak, who was yesterday appointed as Electricity and Water Affairs Minister through a Royal Decree, and the Ministry’s Nursery Department head Abbas Arafat.
