Work on Abu Dhabi's state of the art Formula One circuit on Yas Island is accelerating ahead. The stunning motor racing track will host aces such as Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Mika Hakkinen at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from 2009.
The project will include a marina, where drivers and spectators can moor their yachts next to the track, a Ferrari theme park, polo clubs and golf courses.
"We are delighted with the way construction is progressing and a number of tasks are already ahead of schedule," said Khaldoon Al Mubarak, chairman of the Executive Affairs Authority, Abu Dhabi.
"These include the excavation of the marina and piling work for the pit building." The design combines a nonpermanent section that will deliver the drama of a street circuit with a high-speed permanent track - a first for Formula One.
Average speed on the 5.6km track will be 198kph and there will be at least three points where overtaking will be possible - ensuring plenty of thrills for fans.
"By starting with a blank canvas, we have had the luxury of learning from existing Grand Prix circuits as well as other major sporting events," added Al Mubarak. "This will help us ensure everything we do is best practice and the experience we will deliver to spectators is unparalleled." The project's design is the work of top Formula One circuit architect Hermann Tilke, the man responsible for tracks in Bahrain, Malaysia and China. His team was appointed by Yas Island developers Aldar Properties, whose CEO Ronald Barrott said: "The excavation and walling of the marina is well under way.
"The size and depth of construction will allow it to accommodate more than 150 yachts including up to 20 yachts more than 30m long and six 70m mega-yachts.
"Activity has been ramped up heavily with more than 15,000 people due to be working on Yas Island throughout 2008." Abu Dhabi has secured the rights to host a Grand Prix from 2009 to 2016.
