BAGHDAD: Legal expert Tariq Harb said tody that the stay of U.S. forces needs a new agreement to be submitted by the government to the parliament for voting.

Harb pointed out to Aswat al-Iraq that "if there is an intention for further stay of US forces beyond 2011, this will need to sign a new agreement between Iraqi premier and U.S. president, or who to be deputized, with the same formalities of the previous agreement signed in December 2008".

He added that this agreement should pass in the voting , similar to Law 51 of 2008.

"The new agreement should mention some of the basic matters that might differ from the previous agreement as the duties, numbers, and privileges of these forces, as well the termination period, because the timing of the previous agreement is different from time being", he added.

The security agreement between the two countries stipulated the withdrawal of U.S. forces by the end of this year.

U.S. combat forces withdrew from Iraqi cities and villages in June 2009.
