The Muharraq Governorate will have two more health centres, the Minister of Health, Dr Nada Haffadh, said yesterday.

A new Shaikh Salman Health Centre would be opened in Hala and another in Hidd. The Tribune had earlier reported that a new health centre, with improved facilities,  would be built in Hala.

The Hala centre would serve Al Hala and South Muharraq, the minister said during a meeting with Muharraq residents, councillors and officials.

She said the 312-bed King Hamad Speciality Hospital would be completed next year and commissioned in 2009. Muharraq residents petitioned for improving or rebuilding the Muharraq Maternity Hospital, but Dr Haffadh said there would be no need for another maternity hospital after the King Hamad hospital was commissioned.

Hidd will have a new health centre which will share its land with the Hattam Al Thai Garden and a multi-utility service centre. Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait would invest BD3.2 million in the project. Responding to residents' complaint about the poor state of IT infrastructure in the health sector, Dr Haffadh said a Kuwait-based financial institution had agreed to replace the infrastructure in all the health centres.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of exempting lowly-paid workers, including expatriates, from the BD3 registration fee. Muharraq Municipal Council chairman Mohammed Jassim Hamada told the Tribune on the sideline of the meeting that Muharraq would welcome private sector participation in the healthcare sector, especially in clinics around the King Hamad Hospital. He hoped the area around the King Hamad Hospital would become a major healthcare hub, with more investors entering the sector.
