Tunisia is currently hosting the works of the 18th technical congress of the Arab Agricultural Engineers Union (ABAU) which started on Thursday under the theme "Arab complementarity in the promotion of agricultural science sector and its importance in achieving Arab food security". The event is held under the auspices of the Arab League with the collaboration of the Order of Tunisians Engineers (ILO), the management of the environment and housing of the Arab League, the Arab Agricultural Development, the Arab Union of Farmers (UAA) and the Association of Arab Economic and Social Sciences. On the occasion, Mr. Abdessalem Mansour, Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, said that achieving Arab complementarity in the promotion of agronomy sector requires the promotion of partnership between engineering structures and the exchange of Arab expertise acquired between all countries of the region. He also proposed to establish databases of Arab engineers and agronomists.

The minister emphasized the importance of upgrading the private sector of agronomy in the Arab world, improve the quality of Arab education system in its practical and theoretical aspects and unify the adopted scientific criteria. He also stressed the need to intensify agricultural scientific research. The Minister also stressed the role of agronomy in modernizing the agricultural sector and improving its competitiveness through modernization of production methods and identification of plant and animal varieties in Arab countries. In his address delivered on behalf of Mr. Amr Moussa, Secretary General of the Arab League, Mr. Chedli Neffati, Secretary General of the Arab League and president of the Tunis section of the league, stressed the urgent necessity that Arab countries promote their agricultural sector to reduce the food shortage which cost approximately $ 22.5 billion in 2008, arguing that food security is a key component of strategic Arab security. He added that several Arab countries face a shortage of technical staff capable of developing the agricultural sector's performance.
 
He recommended the need to boost agricultural education in Arab countries in order to develop the human resource capacity for the development of agriculture. Over 50 presentations will be presented during the congress. They will cover issues related to "the guidelines to promote Arab-Arab education in Arab universities and institutes," "methods of agricultural education in achieving the objectives of sustainable development strategy over the next two decades ", "promotion of agricultural education methods and their impact on agricultural development ".
