BEIRUT, (TAP)- The 28th Ministerial Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is due from September 15 to 18 in Tunis under the banner "Challenges and Opportunities of Social Justice in the Arab Region."

Representatives of ESCWA member states, observers from UN agencies and UN member countries that are non-members of the Commission will take part in the session, said the organisation's Communication and Information Unit.

The four-day event is held under the patronage of Caretaker President Moncef Marzouki; it is divided into the Senior Officials' Segment on September 15-16 and the Ministerial Segment on September 17-18, the press release said.

Roundtable discussions will focus on the new development approach, economic policies supportive of social justice, intergenerational justice and access to natural resources and monitoring and measurement.

The session will also seek to set up a governmental committee for information and communication technologies and development.

The Ministerial Session of ESCWA, which is convened every two years, is the governing body of the Commission.

ESCWA is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations Economic and Social Council; it is tasked with supporting economic and social cooperation between the region's countries and underpinning the development process to achieve regional integration.

Its 17 member states are Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia and Yemen.
