THI-QAR - The trade ministry said on Saturday that it has finished preparations to set up a metal silo in northern Thi-Qar with a capacity of 30,000 tons and a cost of 8.260 billion Iraqi dinars (roughly $7 million) to enhance the province's storage capacity, according to the director of the general company for grains.

"The company has announced a tender to build a silo as part of the trade ministry's investment budget for this year in the district of al-Shatra, (45 km) northern al-Nasseriya, with a capacity of 30,000 tons and a cost of $7 million," Hassan Ismail told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

"The ministry has decided on a metal silo because concrete ones take about six years to finish," he said, adding Thi-Qar was suffering from lack of grains storage capacity.

"The silos in the districts of Nasseriya and al-Rifaie have a storage capacity of only 20,000 tons, which is tantamount to one month's consumption in the province," Ismail indicated.

Nasseriya, the capital city of Thi-Qar province, lies 380 km south of Baghdad.
