Amman - President of Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) Khalid Touqan discussed on Wednesday with a group of US congressional aides, who are currently on an official visit to the Kingdom, the peaceful nuclear programme that would turn the kingdom into an electricity exporter.

"Jordan is facing severe challenges in energy and water scarcity in light of increasing demand for energy," Touqan said.

The ongoing specialized and intensive study conducted at the proposed site of the nuclear power plant is meant to provide the highest level of security and safety, Touqan said, adding the plant will not discharge the cooling water into the surrounding environment or pump it back into the sea.

He expressed appreciation for cooperation between Jordan and US House of Representatives and Senate in various spheres.

The group voiced appreciation for efforts exerted by Jordan at various domains, particularly mega-projects.
