MUSCAT -- Omantel' s nationwide Ramadhan charity initiative that distributed food to deserving families across the Sultanate has been recognised as the best programme of its kind in the second annual Tawasul Civil Society Awards. Chief Executive Dr Amer Al Rawas was presented with the award at a ceremony at the Diplomatic Club and it is the second year in succession that Omantel's efforts have been rewarded by Tawasul.
This year during Ramadhan, Omantel staff worked with volunteers from a range of different organisations including Dar al Att'a, the Ministry of Social Development, the Omani Women's Associations and Al Wafa Philanthropic Centres. Omantel employees participated in the campaign as volunteers helping physically on the ground to distributed food supplies to needy families in towns and villages in every part of Oman. Over 1,200 food boxes were eventually distributed with the help of organisations who were able to identify those with the greatest need on the ground.
Additionally Omantel staff and the company donated funds in support of widows raising orphans that successfully targeted more than 1,900 families in need. Omantel staff were also engaged during Ramadhan in visiting children in hospitals and providing gifts to them. Commenting on the award, Hamdan Moosa al Harasi, Senior Manager Events and Sponsorship at Omantel, said: "We are very proud to have received this recognition for our Ramadhan campaign that was managed by Omantel under the spirit of "Give, Share and Care -- Together."
"We had an excellent response from everyone we worked with in this campaign and were also delighted with the enthusiastic response from our own staff who eagerly volunteered to participate and help distribute food and undertake hospital visits." This is the second year of the Civil Society Awards from Tawasul that have been established to recognise the best social investment programmes and projects implemented in the year of 2010.
Applicants for this award, that come from the civil society organisations and the private and public sectors have their projects voted on by thousands of voters across the Sultanate -- ensuring that the campaigns with the most impact and popular support are those that are rewarded.
