DAMASCUS, (SANA) - Speaker of the People's Assembly, Mohammad Jihad al-Laham, stressed that the steadfastness of the Syrian people and the sacrifices of the Syrian Army have foiled all plots aimed at undermining Syria's sovereignty and independence of national decision.

Meeting a media delegation from Venezuela and Latin America countries, al-Laham pointed out that Syria has been facing a media war, in addition to the military and economic wars waged against it for over two years.

He noted that the media war is aimed at deluding the world public opinion about what is happening in Syria.

Speaker al-Laham added that the Syrian people are facing international terrorism  through Takfiri armed terrorist groups which came to fight in Syria in the disguise of "freedom, democracy and human rights."

He asserted that the hegemony imposed by some countries on the UN Security Council resolutions have contributed to absenting justice, honesty and credibility among the countries of the world and have led to fueling conflicts and wars to serve the best interests of the colonialist countries.

Speaker al-Laham hailed the stances of the friendly countries, including Venezuela, Latin America countries, Iran and the BRICS countries, highlighting their efforts to consolidate the steadfastness of Syria.

He emphasized that the political program to resolve the crisis in Syria is the only way to emerge out of the crisis, adding that the Syrian government is open to dialogue with all political sides which discard violence and reject foreign interference.

The delegation said that the peoples of Latin America support Syria and its people in face of the unjust war with all its dimensions, stressing the right of the Syrian people to defend themselves against the armed terrorist groups.

Information Minister: Syrians Determined to Confront Terrorism

Information Minister, Omran al-Zoubi said that the Syrians are determined to confront terrorism and find a political solution to the crisis based on the comprehensive national dialogue without excluding anyone.

Meeting the media delegation , al-Zoubi said that foreign sides do not want a solution to the crisis in Syria, but seek to whip up and prolong a state of chaos, wondering how the shape of the region would be in the absence of a civil secular country as Syria, ''thus the end of the religious moderation that have formed a bridge between cultures across centuries.''

He added that Syria is resolved to push ahead with the confrontation for it has no other options but to defend its independence, indicating that ''Syria is being targeted with the aim to pressure it into offering a historic service to the Zionist project in the region, which cannot happen.''

He added that terrorists from 29 countries who call themselves ''jihadists'' are active on the Syrian soil, warning of the danger implied in the naming as Jihad in Islam expresses a noble idea that they are trying to distort.

He added that the events in Syria are different from any other Arab state due to its nature and location, indicating that ''Syria is the only state that stands against the Zionist entity along with the resistance groups, and is the only state that won't accept the US dictates and policies, which made it a target of colonizers.''

The Information Minister underscored the role of media in raising awareness, pointing to the impact of the passing away of a great and revolutionary figure as Hugo Chavez on the Syrian people. He expressed confidence that the Venezuelan people will follow in the footsteps of the late great leader.

Head of the delegation, Naim Shaabouq said the visit is aimed to convey the reality to foreign media and stress the support of the Latin American people to the Syrian people.

He also demanded that a weekly program that targets the Syrian expatriates be dedicated to covering the activities of the Syrian communities around the world to relay facts about the situation in Syria.
