SIDON, Lebanon: Lebanese pop singer-turned-Islamist Fadl Shaker and 10 other gunmen have taken refuge in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh on the outskirts of Sidon, security sources told The Daily Star Tuesday.

Shaker and his men, who fought the Lebanese Army alongside firebrand Sheikh Ahmad Assir, have fled to the camp and currently reside there, the sources added.

The military investigative judge has issued arrest warrants in absentia against Assir and Shaker.

The sources said that empty food packages of fast food chains located in Sidon were found in trash bins outside Ain al-Hilweh. “Shaker and his gang are placing several food orders per day,” one source said.

At least 18 soldiers and 28 gunmen were killed in the June clashes between Assir’s fighters and the Army in the Sidon suburb of Abra. Assir’s current whereabouts remain unknown.
