Semnan province produces 6 percent of the world's gypsum and ranks first in gypsum reserves across the country.

The presence of 41 gypsum powder production factories has turned Semnan into a major gypsum processing hub, six of which are traditional units, while 35 are industrial units.

Davoud Maddah, a member of Gypsum and Salt Knowledge and Industry Coordination Center, told ISNA that over 50 active mines exist across the city of Semnan.

"Semnan secures 80 percent of the domestic demand for gypsum," he said.

Maddah noted that using new technologies and manufacturing new gypsum products will help promote the status of gypsum industry.

"We should be able to produce gypsum panel, gypsum wall, fireproof gypsum wall, waterproof gypsum wall and nano-gypsum," he said.

"Some 1,377 and 4,000 people are directly and indirectly involved in the provincial gypsum mines, respectively."
The official further said the province has the capacity of producing 6 million tons of gypsum per year, of which 97 percent can be exported.

Maddah said establishing an international brand for Semnan gypsum is of high importance. "Currently, Semnan Industrial Township Company, Semnan University and the Presidential Office's Technology Department are working together in this regard," he said.

He mentioned transportation costs as a problem facing the gypsum industry, as the cost of transferring gypsum by truck is more than the money earned by selling gypsum.

"If Semnan's gypsum producers tapped 60 percent of their capacities, they could meet the country's total demand," he said.

Maddah said the gypsum reserves of the province will continue production for the next 22 years. Alireza Khosravi, a member of Majlis Development Commission, said close to 14 million tons of minerals are extracted from provincial mines per annum.

Khosravi added that 45,000 workers are working in 1,900 industrial units.

"Semnan province ranks first in the country in the production of gypsum, salt and Celestine," he said. It is the second and third producer of sodium sulfate and chromium respectively.

Celestine is the raw material for producing detergents.
