RIYADH: A high profile Saudi-Canadian small and medium-enterprise (SME) business meeting concluded in the capital recently with the participation of 250 Saudi and Canadian firms in the presence of the Canadian Ambassador Dennis Horak.

The meeting with the Council of Saudi Chambers (CSC) expressed hope in the 2030 Vision for closer partnership between the business sectors of the two countries.

A source from the CSC said that the forum was part of the efforts of the Saudi-Canadian Business Council to encourage closer trade partnerships between the two sides in this sector, especially after the announcement of Kingdom's 2030 Vision, which focuses on SME interests in the national economy.

Speaking on the occasion, Omar Bahalioh, CSC secretary general, described the strategic partnership between the two countries as a way to recognize the investment and joint venture possibilities for each side.

He said that Canada represents a strategic partner of the Kingdom, adding that the SME sector has an important role to play in the revitalization of the economy.

According to Bahalioh, Saudi Arabia has been very interested in this sector since it set up the national commission for the SME sector in 2015, to empower it in the context of national transformation program.

Saudi Arabia also recently announced its 2030 vision to raise the sector's contribution to gross domestic product from 20 percent to 35 percent by 2030.

The Kingdom's vision highlights many opportunities in the SME sector, as the development of the country relies heavily upon the need to diversify the Saudi economy and develop the social sector.

The Canadian president of Saudi-Canadian Business Council, Edwin Holder, praised the role of the Joint Business Council in promoting economic relations between the two countries. He stressed his country's keenness to attract Saudi investments and develop partnerships with Saudi businessmen.

He referred to the efforts of the ambassadors of the two countries in this regard, and said that through the "Vision 2030," the Kingdom represents a great opportunity for the private sector to move forward in forging new partnerships and striking business deals.
