Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Company (Sasref) on 22 May signed two contracts, with Petrocon Arabia (PAL) and Yokogawa Middle East (YME), for the implementation of Phase 2 of the refinery’s Instrumentation Master Plan (IMP). The project, with a total estimated investment of more than SR337mn ($90mn), is to be completed by end-2008. The IMP Phase 2 includes: the total replacement of the refinery’s relay-based Instrumented Protective System (IPS or Safeguarding system) and relevant field instruments; the total replacement of the Distributed Control System (DCS, and relevant field instruments and quality measurement instruments; the replacement of other obsolete stand-alone automation systems, applications and integration with the new DCS and IPS; and integrating the upgraded systems and instruments during prior stages of the IMP Program with the new facilities, said Sasref. The export refinery is a 50/50 joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Shell Saudi Arabia Refining with a production capacity of 305,000 b/d of high quality refined products, including kerosene, naphtha, benzene, fuel oil and LPG (MEES, 31 March 2003).
