Tehran, August 26, IRNA
Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said here on Sunday that the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) should seriously deal with the unilateral economic sanctions imposed by certain countries against its members.
He made the remarks in the opening session of the experts meeting of the 16th NAM summit in Tehran on Sunday.
The Islamic Republic of Iran will reinforce the organization and enable the body to shoulder its historic and grave responsibility, he said.
"We believe that eradication of nuclear weapons by 2025 as proposed by NAM should be fully implemented," he said.
Iran's nuclear program is of peaceful nature, Salehi said, adding that the Islamic Republic of Iran calls for annihilation of nuclear weapons and seek implementation of article 6 of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to this effect.
"Nothing should deviate our attention from the real threat and probable use of such weapons against those countries that do not possess them," he said.
The refusal of the Zionist regime to sig up to the NPT is the main obstacle to the enforcement of the treaty, he said.
In 1974 Iran proposed formation of a nuclear free zone in the Middle East which has not been implemented by this time, he said.
Iran's nuclear program is fully peaceful and the country always calls for mutual cooperation with relative bodies, Salehi said, adding that Iran is committed to its obligations, avoids confrontation and only seeks its legitimate rights, Salehi said.
There is no doubt that NAM has always opposed such conditions which are against the UN Charter, he said.
The experts meeting of the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement was officially started here Sunday morning
