KUWAIT -- Sabah Al-Ahmad City, inaugurated on Thursday by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, is the first Kuwaiti city that has been entirely constructed by the private sector.
According to information KUNA got from Pearls of Kuwait Real Estate Company, which developed the city, the project comes as an effort to develop the economy and to stress the role of the private sector in supporting economic development.
The company said that all infrastructure services of phases A1 and A2 were complete, adding that infrastructure works of phase A3 were undergoing.
It said that it used modern ways in planning and constructing the city's infrastructure and facilities, noting that the city is a special project not only regionally but internationally also, as a whole city is being established on a wetland.
The company said it provided specialized studies and research prior to beginning the project.
It pointed out that His Highness the Amir launched on Thursday the pumping of water in channels and passages which increased the length of beaches by 84 kilometers, stressing that environmental effects were considered.
It said it established a 1.2 kilometer wave breaker to protect the project, using concrete units designed to ensure providing maximum efficiency.
Specialized thorough studies were conducted to ensure the quality of water based on a precise water testing system of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), which is approved by the Environment Public Authority, it added.
There are more than 800 kinds of marine creatures in the city, including pearl oysters, in addition to corals that grow naturally in the project, it noted.
It said it planted mangrove trees in the environmental islands that are part of the project to provide a rich environment for marine creatures to grow and to prevent sand drifting at the same time.
International advisors in marine biology were consulted regarding choosing plants that tolerate saltiness and dryness, it noted.
Meanwhile, the company said it constructed a building for post, telegram, and telephone services, in addition to providing fiber optic cables to ensure fast transfer of information.
This is the first time in which fiber optic cables are used to connect a power relay station to each home, it said.
It pointed out that the city has a unique station to purify waster water which will be used to water plants, adding that the station could currently serve more than 15,000 people and that the number would increase to more than 45,000 people upon its completion.
The station is one of the most advanced stations in the Arab world, it noted.
It said phases A1 and A2 of rain drainage and sewage pipes are ready and that works of A3 phase were ongoing, pointing out that by the end of the project, the pipes would be 237,500 meters long.
In addition, phases A1 and A2 of electrical cable networks are complete and works of A3 phase were ongoing, it said.
By the end of the project, the cables will be 1.167 million meters long, it added.
A total of 44.123 million square meters were dug for water channels and passages in phases A1, A2, and A3 which are all done, it said.
The quantity of water in the channels and passages is 32,342 million square meters, while the quantity of washed sand on the beaches equals 1.757 million square meters, it added.
