The UAE boxing team won two silver and four bronze medals in the Arab Boxing Championship and collected two bronze medals from the Egypt International Boxing Tournament.

The winning team featured Qasim Bilal Al Baroot and Hassan Askoor who both won silver medals in the Arab Championship.

Al Baroot, an armyman, took part in the 60-kg category and was unfortunate in missing out on the gold medal.

Al Baroot's teammate Askoor participated in the super heavyweight category and performed well before going down in his final encounter.

Abdullah Nasir Al Hameeri, who took part in the 51-kg category, won a bronze medal. Al Hameeri is a policeman, working in Abu Dhabi.

Salim Jamal Al Merri, a university student, represented the UAE in the 54-kg category and won a bronze medal.

Khalfan Ali Khalfan, an armyman, clinched a bronze medal in the 57-kg category, while Ebrahim Al Zaabi participated in the over-91-kg category and also won a bronze.

The UAE team held a training camp in Syria for two weeks before the championship and took part in the Egypt International Boxing Tournament in which Al Zaabi and Askoor each won a bronze medal, overcoming tough and more experienced opponents.

Boxers from Italy, Korea, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and hosts Egypt were in the fray.

Salih Saeed Al Nuaimi, the secretary-general of the UAE Boxing Federation (BF), said the achievements of the boxers were the result of the tireless efforts of Shaikh Hamed Bin Butti Al Hamed, the president of the UAE BF, to upgrade and improve the standard of the boxers.

"The big achievement in Egypt makes us optimistic about our prospects in the Asiad," Al Nuaimi commented.
