Doha: Indian Doctors Club and Indian Medical association jointly conducted two Continuing Medication Education (CME) seminars during the month of November.
Prof Dr V Balakrishnan, Chief of Medical Gastroenterology, Amritha institute of Medical Sciences, Cochin and former Professor of Trivandrum Medical College, lectured on Updates in the diagnosis and management of Viral Hepatitis with special emphasis on hepatitis "C" on November 9.
The programme, which also attended, by the families of IMA members was held at Doha Grand Hotel. Dr Balakrishnan stressed the need to realise the increasing incidence of hepatitis and other liver disorders.
Being an acclaimed researcher in this field, he also shared his experience of other centres in India and summarised the findings of his specialised research regarding pancreatitis in South India. An author of two books on pancreatitis (inflammation of the Insulin and digestive enzymes producing Pancreatic gland) in India, he opined that the disease is obviously different from the disease pattern of chronic pancreatitis in the West.
This was followed by an active discussion with the members comparing the incidence of Hepatitis in Qatar, especially Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The various measures adopted by the authorities to control and treat the disease was explained by senior HMC doctors.
The event was sponsored by Jordanian Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Company (JPM). Dr Ramesh Babu - IMA Treasurer welcomed the audience and Dr Philip Mammen introduced the speaker to the audience. Dr Joyal Jacob Mathew expressed the vote of thanks.
On the third day, the second session was held at the Conference Hall of Birla Public School. Dr Jem Prabhakar spoke on recent advances in breast cancer management and detailed the change in trends in the surgical management.
Dr Jem Parabhakar is head of breast surgery unit and additional professor of surgical oncology division of Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum.
The regional cancer centre catering to the south Indian population manages nearly 1,200 new cases of breast cancer every year. Dr Mohan Thomas - IMA Scientific committee convener, welcomed the audience and Dr Malini Chandrashekharan - IMA Convener for medical camps gave away the vote of thanks.
