Doha: The invitation to tender for laying a 42K network of pre-coated underground pipes for Qatar Cool's West Bay District Cooling Scheme was released to a number of pre-qualified Engineering Contractors at a presentation given by Qatar Cool last Sunday, the company said.

"As a result of its unique portfolio of benefits, demand for our District Cooling Services has exceeded our expectations," said Qatar Cool General Manager, Colin Goulding. "Our priorities are to ensure sufficiency of supply within a tightly defined time frame. For this reason we have decided to build an additional cooling plant to service the West Bay Scheme, as well as advancing our plans to lay pipe work. "

Hazim Alsadek, Parsons Qatar operations manager (PWI Group) said the pipeline network contract is expected to be worth approximately QR75m for the first stage of a total QR335m investment programme over the next two years.

The pipe laying is to be completed by August 2005, and close cooperation with other utility suppliers will ensure minimum disruption to road users whilst ensuring smooth customer connection.

The Scheme will be able to supply more than 51,000 refrigerating tons of cooling, enough to meet the cooling requirements of 60 typical office buildings. Further schemes are planned for the future and it is estimated that over QR 1billion will be invested in developing District Cooling schemes for Qatar over the next five years.
