Jeddah -- Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, Governor of Makkah Region, paid an inspection tour here today of the residential areas in Jeddah badly affected by the recent flash floods. Prince Khalid was briefed on measures taken there to mitigate suffering of their dwellers.

During the tour, the Prince listened to the citizens who asked him to convey their profound thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz for the interest he showed in their condition and for alleviating their suffering through securing shelters for and providing them with their needs, plus his order to implement necessary solutions for their suffering.

Prince Khalid toured also the precautionary dam, currently under construction, to stop leakages and listened to a brief about the project that aims to face any emergency in case of water level's rise.

In the aftermath of his tour, Prince Khalid explained that overseeing what is taking place in the affected areas, after the flash floods in Jeddah, was made according to a directive by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the Crown Prince and the Second Deputy Premier. In a press statement, Prince Khalid said: I am here today, touring these areas in line with a noble directive to witness what has been done so that all can have a clear view of the situation. There is a plan that will be carried out after royal approval and it will cover all recently affected areas, he added.

Answering a question from Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on whether all safeguards are in place to face any emergency to reassure Jeddah residents, Prince Khalid said: I can't say that if another flood comes that there will be full readiness. However, we took all that ensures confronting emergency conditions. There are project which will be approved and will have great impact on facing any emergency, God forbids.

Some works are taking place now, but it is temporary, to stop the gap till (Permanent) ones are approved to serve these areas and their dwellers, God will, and to secure their safety and comfort, he added. On facts finding panel ordered to be formed by the King, he noted that it is still questioning whomsoever it wants, and its findings would be submitted to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

Concerning compensations ordered by the king to those affected during the flash floods, Prince Khalid explained that 'We have identified the damages. Compensations will be paid to the victims' families soon God willing.'

Prince Khalid made it clear that occupying tracts of land in order to reclaim them, is rejected and any one who commits that will be punished. He asserted that even previous mistakes in this regard will be reviewed and dealt with to guarantee that they will not be repeated.
