DAMASCUS - President Bashar al-Assad on Friday received a letter from Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz on the current developments in the Syrian arena, conveyed by Mauritania's Prime Minister Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf.

During the talks, President al-Assad presented a review on the reality of what is happening in Syria and the attempts of targeting it by all means to create chaos in it.

The President reviewed the steps of political reform being carried out by the state, stressing that "these steps are running in parallel with restoring security and stability and protecting citizens."

The Mauritanian Prime Minister, for his part, highlighted the gravity of targeting Syria, considering that Syria's stability is essential for the security and stability of the Arab countries and the region.

He said that the aim behind what is taking place is fragmenting Syria and undermining its historical and leading role in the region.

Laghdaf reviewed his country's view on the means to get out of the crisis Syria is going through, with President al-Assad expressing appreciation of the efforts made by Mauritania to help Syria overcome this stage.

The meeting was attended by Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem, Presidential Political and Media Advisor Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban, Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal Mikdad and the Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Hamadi Ould Hamadi.

In the same context, Mauritanian Prime Minister was received by his Syrian counterpart Dr. Adel Safar.
