President Bashar al-Assad and Mrs. Asma al-Assad met on Sunday evening with King Juan Carlos of Spain and Queen Sofia.
Talks dealt with the level of the distinguished relations binding Syria and Spain, and the importance of Syrian-Spanish coordination over different issues of interest for both friendly countries.
President al-Assad praised Spanish stances over the issues of the Middle East region.
Later, King Carlos and Queen Sofia held a dinner banquet in honor of President al-Assad and Mrs. al-Assad. The banquet was attended by Spanish Crown Prince Felipe de Borbon and His Wife.
President al-Assad will hold talks on Monday with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on the bilateral relations between Syria and Spain and the latest regional and international developments.
The Spanish King had received a letter from President al-Assad on July 8th 2008 on the developments in the Middle East and the constructive role of Syria and Spain in boosting up the security and stability as well as the economic and cultural cooperation between the Arab countries and Europe.
The Syrian-Spanish relations have achieved significant developments over the past few years following President al-Assad's visit to Spain in 2001 and 2004 and the visit of the Spanish King to Syria in October 2003.
