Muscat - The Port of Salalah's general cargo terminal received the MV Yusho Spica the first Panamax limestone vessel to call at the port. The 228m bulk vessel took on 73,000 tonnes of limestone on its maiden call at Salalah. Operations went very well with over 18,000 tonnes loaded a day. The ability to handle such a large bulk vessel was made possible by the ports investment in new mobile harbor cranes that are able to work on both containerised and non-containerised cargo and provide flexibility to both the ports terminals with their ability to lift heavy loads and move from berth to berth.

General Cargo Terminal Operations Manager Hatim Fadhil said, "It's the first time in our history that the Port of Salalah has handled such a large bulk vessel and the call of the MV Yusho Spica demonstrates the port's capacity for large bulk ships as well as containers ships. The local limestone is of the highest quality and has led to limestone becoming one of our largest bulk exports in recent years." The general cargo terminal has seen double digit growth for seven consecutive years and is being expanded with new deepwater berths and facilities that will cater to the multiple cargo types handled at the port well into the future.
