Iran plans to produce gasoline from furnace oil, which will be unprecedented in the Middle East, said the managing director of National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company.
"This will be achieved by launching advanced residual current device (RCD) and resid fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC or petroleum) refining units of Shazand Imam Khomeini Refinery in Markazi province to increase the capacity and improve the quality of the refinery's products," Alireza Zeighami was quoted as saying by IRNA.
"By commissioning these advanced units, which will use the latest technologies of Europe and the US, 7-8 million liters of furnace oil will be turned daily into value-added products, including gasoline, liquefied gas, propylene, premium gasoline, oil gas, kerosene and jet fuel," he added.
He also said oil will be first refined in the RCD unit and then sent to RFCC unit to be turned into octane 95 gasoline.
Zeighami added that some of the country's refineries produce 23-30 percent of furnace oil.
He said the project to produce gasoline from furnace oil is one of the most successful refining projects of the country.
"RCD and RFCC units have daily capacities of 80,000 and 95,000 barrels respectively."
Zeighami noted that with the coming on stream of the RCD and RFCC units, the refinery's liquefied gas production will increase from 1 million liters per day to 3.6 million liters per day.
By producing the said amount of liquefied gas per day, he added, not only will Iran become self-sufficient in this respect, but also will be able to export 1,000 tons of the product daily.
Zeighami added that after these two units become operational, the country will also be able to produce 1.1 million liters of propylene per day for the first time.
"By launching the units, premium gasoline and gasoline production will reach 3.6 million liters and 12 million liters per day respectively, jet fuel will increase from 4.2 million liters per day to 6 million liters, oil gas production will amount to 9 million liters per day and furnace oil production will decrease from 9 million liters per day to 2 million liters," he said.
In October 2012, supervision manager of National Petrochemical Company, Ali Mohammad Basaqzadeh, said that with the inauguration of eight new projects, Iran's petrochemical production capacity will increase to 6.5 million tons by the end of the current Iranian year (started March 20, 2012).
