MUSCAT -- Oman Telecommunications Comp-any (Omantel) will launch today wireless fixed phone service -- better known as wireless local loop (WLL) -- in 10 new rural villages in Al Dhakhiliya region as well as the wilayats of Al Duqm and Mahout in Al Wusta region which has yet to receive fixed line service. These new connections are part of the WLL project Omantel is currently implementing in various parts of the Sultanate. The objective of the project is to expand the infrastructure of communications sector in the Sultanate.
In this stage, the wireless fixed phone service will cover a number of villages in Al Dhakhiliya region. They include Somarah (50 lines), Mahram (300 lines), Muqihfah (50 lines), Ras al Jabal (150 lines), Wadi Ghoul (300 lines), Misfat al Khwater (50 lines), Sant (200 lines), Dam (100 lines), Kubarah (150 lines) and Mary (100) lines. Meanwhile, Omantel will provide around 400 phone lines to the Wilayat of Al Duqm and the village of Haj in the Wilayat of Mahout in Al Wusta region.
It is expected that more than 1,850 subscribers will enjoy wireless fixed phone line service for the first time. They will also enjoy Internet services, which will play an important role in helping these villages to interact with the outside world, especially school students, who will in turn spread digital culture in the villages and wilayats. It is worth noting that wireless fixed phone line service is not at all different from the currently used fixed line service. The new system will provide all the advantages of any fixed line connected through copper cables.
Subscribers can make international calls, navigate the Internet, use fax and other services provided by the normal fixed phone. Omantel, meanwhile, stressed that the wireless fixed line project is progressing as planned. It will cover around 200 rural villages in the Sultanate and wilayats. The project will provide about 21,000 lines upon completion.
