Muscat: Dr Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy, Minister of Commerce and Industry, inaugurated the showroom of Dar Al Herfya or 'World of Handicrafts' at the Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos on Monday.

Dar Al Herfya is a showroom featuring products made by over 355 families from all across Oman who have come together to make the handicraft items. Their handicraft items, thanks to the showroom, have now got a room in the up market commercial complex in the heart of the city.

Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy lauded the efforts made by Dar Al Herfya to bring these families from all across the country together to showcase their skills and participate in this economic process. He said that the country needed such private sector initiatives.

He said that this was a small firm which managed finance for the project from private sector and made sure that one of the private firms provided the space for showroom at a low price. He said that it was very important that someone was making efforts to bridge the gap in supply and demand.

The minister said that the government is always ready to provide all sorts of support, particularly training facilities, to all those who want to excel in their areas of interest, but someone will have to take an initiative like the one seen in case of Dar Al Herfya.

Zuwaina bint Sultan Al Rashdi, chief executive officer of Dar Al Herfya, said that she got the idea, roped in families after a series of lectures and workshops before they could really come forward to participate in the process.

She said that the finance and designing part was taken care of by Dar Al Herfya. "There are skills available. We just needed to encourage them to come up with products which attract the people as well as meet their demands," she said.

Dar Al Herfya is showcasing the art of pottery making, carpentry, khanjar or dagger making. It also has on display the art of silver napkin rings, silver key chains inspired by Omani khanjar and other ornaments along with various other decorative items.
