MUSCAT -- An international conference on Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) will be held at Grand Hyatt Hotel today. The three-day conference, organised by the Health Ministry and Sultan Qaboos University, is aimed at increasing the scientific knowledge and skills of physicians and healthcare staff working in anaesthesia, critical care and pain management. It is also designed to give physicians an opportunity to interact and network with other experts within the region and the world over.
Saif bin Ahmed al Rawahi, Under-Secretary for Financial and Administrative Affairs, Ministry of Health (MoH), will preside at the opening ceremony. In a statement, Dr Maher Jaffer Abdulrahim al Bahrani, Senior Consultant and Head of Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Royal Hospital, said the conference aims to improve healthcare and patient management in the Sultanate through continuous medical education and other such initiatives. Scientific discussions will revolve around 60 papers focusing on the science and techniques of anaesthesia and many aspects of specialties such as anesthesia for cardiac, chest, paediatric and obstetric surgeries.
The conference will also discuss problems encountered while giving anaesthesia for severely obese patients, management of difficult airways during anaesthesia for adults and children and management of pain in children after surgery, he noted. In the field of critical care, international experts will discuss management of severe infection of the blood. They will also explore through the recent advancements in treatment of liver failure, severe lung injury, severe continuous epilepsy, management of trauma and brain protection and different methods of mechanical ventilation in intensive care unit.
More than 400 delegates from various hospitals in the Sultanate, the GCC and other Arab countries are expected to participate in the conference, besides eminent speakers from the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon and India. On the sidelines of the event, more than 20 exhibitors will showcase the latest innovations and equipment in the field of anaesthesia, critical care and allied specialties. Oman Society of Anaesthesia and Critical Care and the International Pan Arab Critical Care Medicine Society are supporting the conference.
