MUSCAT -- Khalfan bin Nasr al Wahaibi, Director General of Civil Services, inaugurated an Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) machine at Badr Al Samaa, Ruwi recently. The inaugural ceremony was attended by a large number of dignitaries and medical professionals from different parts of the country.
The state of the art ESWL machine, the first of its kind in the private healthcare sector in Oman, is designed to give relief to patients suffering from kidney stones. This machine is capable of locating as well as assessing the size of the stone, thereby allowing the physician concerned to precisely apply the right techniques to fragmentise the stone. The fragments are eventually secreted out along with the urine.
Lithotripsy is used to deal with most common stones in this fashion, eliminating the need for otherwise painful and expensive surgery. The inaugural ceremony was followed by a Continuous Medical Education (CME) programme, which was attended by more than 150 doctors and healthcare professionals. Dr Kurien George, Senior Specialist, Department of Urology (Royal Hospital) and Dr Eddu S Srinath, Urologist at Badr Al Samaa, outlined a number of urology related medical conditions.
The CME programme was the eighth in the series hosted by Badr Al Samaa. In response to a question, Dr Eddu explained that the cost of a normal ESWL management case at Badr Al Samaa was among the lowest in the GCC. Earlier, in welcome remarks, V T Vinod, Director, stressed Badr Al Samaa's commitment to providing better healthcare services at affordable cost.
