Dubai: National carrier Oman Air is looking to launch direct flights to Shanghai in China, Najaf International Airport in Iraq and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Bangladesh this year, according to a senior official of Oman Air.
Speaking exclusively to the Times of Oman, Mohammed Mubarak Al Shikely, general manager marketing, Oman Air, said that the final approval is yet to come from China.
"We are putting in place all the requirements so that we start flying to China in 2015," he added, speaking on the sidelines of Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.
The dates for flights to these destinations have not been finalised and Oman Air will announce the dates once everything is ready on the ground.
"We have added three destinations so far this year and are planning to add another three," he said.
In 2015, Oman Air has launched direct flights to Singapore, Manila and Goa in India. He said they will be welcoming a brand new 787 Dreamliner by the end of the year.
As of April 2015, Oman Air's fleet consisted of six Airbus A330-300s, four Airbus A330-200s, two Boeing B737-900s, 20 Boeing B737-800s, one Boeing B737-700, four Embraer E175s and two ATR 42s.
Six Boeing 787 Dreamliners are on order for delivery from 2015. By 2018, Oman Air's total fleet size is expected to be around 50 aircraft, rising to 70 aircraft by 2020.
Regarding plans for 2016, he said it was a little early for him to talk about this.
"However, there is a list of destinations which are being studied for 2016 as the expansion of the airline is in full swing," he said. He, however, added that they are looking at Korea but no final decision has been taken.
Regarding flights to India, he said Oman Air would like to operate more flights to that country. "We are continuously pushing India so that we can add more flights," he said.
"Oman Air can fly to more Indian destinations besides increasing capacities on the existing destinations," he said.
Oman Air currently flies to 11 destinations in India, including Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Bangalore, Kozhikode, Jaipur and Goa.
