MUSCAT -- Young boys and girls, selected from various public and private schools across the country, embarked upon a two-week-long programme that will acquaint them with the nuances of newspaper making alongside news writing and editing at the OEPPA (Oman Establishment for Press, Publishing and Advertising) premises yesterday.

Organised by the Studies and Research Centre at the OEPPA as part of its aim to impart knowledge and training to Omani children during the school vacation, the one-of-its-kind programme aims at a manifold set of skills that needs to be nurtured at a young age, according to Mirfath al Araimi, Director of Research and Studies Centre.

"We are organising this summer programme for children between the age bracket of 9-14 as we wanted to discover their hidden talents especially in the field of journalism, photography and printing, and designing".

The key areas of focus of the programme delivered in both Arabic and English are developing research skills, basic journalism and writing skills, photography skills, introduction to printing technology, besides the marketing skills, and basic knowledge of safety and security. At the end of the project each group will have their own project such as developing a magazine, bringing out a newspaper so on and so forth.

"They will also have practical sessions such as writing their own news, their own articles, features or anything that is interesting to these young minds. They will be through all the facets of journalism and newspaper making during the camp", she added.

The camp, conducted from August 10 to 14 for girls and August 17 to 21 for boys, will also assist them identify their preferences and choices as to their desired job is concerned and prompt them to think towards their goals in life.
