Dubai, 21st Dec 2008 (WAM) -- The Public Parks and Horticulture Department of Dubai Municipality has planted a new species of decorative palm trees brought from Seychelles, Africa four years ago. The trees, which belong to the Palmae family of palms, are called Tarnakis palms.

Ahmed AbdulKarim, Director of Public Parks and Horticulture Department, said all the plants in these species are resistant to cold and dry climate and they can grow in limy soil and some of them are can also withstand salt also. He pointed out that these types of trees are sun friendly and are not supposed to grow on stagnant water.

He added that the scientific name of the species is Trithinax pavifolia. They are fanny and thorny trees and the stem grows 10 metres high and 15 centimetres in diametre. The stem has two layers of fibres and the leaves are 1-2 metres long.

AbdulKarim said the department had experimented planting this species of palm trees at the Garhood Nursery in a covered atmosphere. "After that we took it out in the open area and continued with that experiment for two years and that experiment was also successful," he said.

"After that it was decided to plant these trees on the airport road. A total of 100 trees were planted in September 2006 and the experiment was successful 95% as 95 of them survived. It was again modified in December this year," said AbdulKarim.
