The North Cairo Electricity Distribution Company (NCEDC) is preparing to receive and operate Egypts first smart electricity grid at the New Administrative Capital (NAC), on behalf of the French company EDF.

This network will be the Ministry of Electricitys first programme transitioning to smart networks that are currently being implemented at the level of the unified national network.

Hossam Afifi, NCEDC Chairperson, said the sector experts will review all the networks components and perform tests, to ensure that the networks conform to the distribution companies specifications.

The inspections come in preparation for the signing of the smart grids operating contracts, with agreements and private contracts with EDF France also awaiting completion.

Afifi added that all NAC facilities depend on the latest technologies to reduce and prevent breakdowns. The smart grid would also stop blackouts and operate automatic control centres that remotely handle the disconnection and connection of electric current.

This is designed to occur without the interference of the human element, which enables it to control loads and consumption rates, determine loss points and current thefts.

He pointed out that using the tunnel method to transfer electricity to the NAC network has many advantages. This includes doubling the quantities of energy that can be transferred to consumption areas, up to 1GW, with reducing failure rates and speeding their detection process.
