KUWAIT CITY: Member of the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee at the National Assembly MP Duaij Al-Shimmari has announced that the committee will convene on Sunday to discuss a request to lift the parliamentary immunity of MPs Adnan Abdul-Samad and Ahmad Lari. He noted a majority of the committee members favor the lifting of the immunity. The request, however, hinges on national unity in addition to the conspiracy aspect of the issue which would be included in the committee's report particularly since the request differs from earlier requests to lift the parliamentary immunity of some parliamentarians, said the MP. MP Al-Shimmari noted the MPs in question cannot decide on the request. However, they have the right to express their viewpoints which will be included in the committee's report. He hoped the MPs will accept the consequences which will result from the committee's recommendations. Al-Shimmari did not rule out the fact that Abdul-Samad and Lari may attend the committee's meeting to give their views before the committee takes its decision.
Meanwhile parliamentary sources have revealed there are speculations in the Parliament circles that MPs Abdul-Samad and Lari will see the Speaker of the National Assembly after meeting member of the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee. They are expected to request the session to lift their immunities be held behind closed doors. However, this can only be decided by the Parliament, says sources. Meanwhile MP Dr Waleed Al-Tabtabaei has informed the Arab Times that he favors the lifting of the immunity of the MPs. "This is my personal opinion," he added.
