MUSCAT -- Z-LASIK, the refractive procedure of choice for many people around the world, is also witnessing a strong uptake at Muscat Eye Laser Centre (MELC).

Hailed as one of the greatest breakthroughs of modern corrective eye surgery, Z-LASIK has been widely popularised by Muscat Eye Laser Center through the delivery of world-class services in the Sultanate.

This commitment to excellence is also borne out by the fact that Muscat Eye Laser Center is the only eye care services provider in Oman to be certified for the ISO 9001:2008 quality standard.

At the core of Z-LASIK's global appeal in the treatment of refractive vision is the combination of accuracy, safety and convenience afforded patients by this procedure. Unlike conventional procedures that involve the use of scalpels, Z- LASIK employs sophisticated laser technology to rid the eye of vision problems and thus free patients from the constraints of glasses and contact lenses. Not surprisingly, more than 30 million procedures have been performed worldwide in the treatment of long and short sightedness as well as astigmatism.

This bladeless and painless technique is also one of Muscat Eye Laser Center's most sought-after surgical services pioneered in the Sultanate by the clinic's co-founder and director, Dr Maria Clara Arbelaez. An internationally renowned corneal surgeon, Dr Abelaez, has performed numerous Z-LASIK procedures, and has also presented on the subject to international audiences.

"Muscat Eye Laser Center is the only provider of Z-LASIK surgeries in Oman. It's a procedure that has benefitted thousands of people who now enjoy not only enhanced vision, but as a result, also a more vibrant lifestyle. Many of our patients are those who have heard about our high standards from patients simply overjoyed by the success of the surgeries performed on them," said Dr Arbelaez.

At Muscat Eye Laser Center, the pre-surgical evaluation procedure takes about 90 minutes, the experienced surgeon explained. "The process begins with a series of tests to ensure that the patient's eyes are healthy and suitable for laser vision correction. Depending on the results, our team of specialists will design the treatment that will best correct the refractive errors. The actual surgery takes only a couple of minutes with patients given eye-drops to numb the eye. Post-surgery, we advise patients to return home immediately and rest. Patients are given eye-drops during the first few days, and any discomfort or eye sensitivity will gradually disappear," she added.
